Saudi Students Revolutionize Hajj Experience with Smart Technology
June 1, 2025 | Makkah, Saudi Arabia — In a bold fusion of tradition and technology, a group of innovative Saudi students is transforming the way pilgrims navigate the physically demanding and logistically complex journey of Hajj.
Among the standout innovations is Musaed, a smart application powered by the Internet of Things (IoT). Once downloaded and initialized, the app allows Hajj pilgrims to locate their camp areas even without internet access, thanks to an integrated offline mapping system.
This initiative was developed as part of a national drive to harness local tech talent in support of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals, which include enhancing the pilgrim experience through digital transformation. The project was showcased during the recent Hajj Hackathon, drawing praise from both religious authorities and global tech leaders.
“The biggest challenge during Hajj is orientation. Camps often look similar and getting lost is a real concern,” said one of the lead developers. “With Musaed, we give each pilgrim a digital sense of direction, reducing stress and saving precious time.”
Using QR codes linked to each camp, the system requires only a one-time download before going offline. The application then uses internal sensors and pre-loaded GPS coordinates to guide users back to their designated tents with pinpoint accuracy—even in areas with weak or no mobile signal.
This innovation is a part of broader efforts by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to improve services through smart technologies, AI-based crowd control systems, and real-time health monitoring solutions for the millions who perform Hajj annually.
Experts say this new wave of youth-driven solutions is not only elevating safety and comfort for pilgrims but also placing Saudi Arabia at the forefront of Islamic smart tourism.
