Iran Demands Lebanon Ceasefire and Release of Frozen Assets Before Talks Begin

Tehran: Iran has set clear preconditions before entering negotiations over the ongoing Middle East tensions. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran will only participate in talks if two previously agreed steps are implemented — a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s frozen financial assets.

According to a report by Reuters, Ghalibaf stated on Friday that these measures were already part of earlier understandings between the parties but have not yet been carried out.

Iran Links Talks to Regional Security Situation

Iran has made it clear that negotiations cannot move forward while fighting continues in Lebanon. The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has intensified in recent weeks, raising fears of a wider regional war.

Tehran believes that a ceasefire in Lebanon is necessary to stabilize the region and create a constructive environment for diplomatic discussions. Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that continued hostilities could undermine efforts to de-escalate tensions across the Middle East.

Iran Seeks Release of Blocked Assets

Another major condition set by Iran is the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets held abroad. These funds have remained blocked for years due to international sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program and financial restrictions.

Iran argues that releasing these assets was part of earlier diplomatic understandings and should be implemented before any negotiations begin. Tehran views the unfreezing of these funds as an essential step toward rebuilding trust.

Diplomatic Efforts to Reduce Middle East Tensions

The demand comes at a time when global powers are attempting to reduce tensions across the region. Diplomatic discussions have been ongoing to prevent the conflict from spreading further, particularly amid concerns about shipping security in strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts say Iran’s conditions signal that the country wants both economic relief and regional stability guarantees before engaging in broader negotiations.

Uncertainty Over Future Negotiations

Iran’s stance could complicate planned diplomatic talks involving international mediators. If the ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of frozen assets are not implemented, negotiations could face delays or remain stalled.

Observers believe that resolving these issues will be crucial for easing tensions in the Middle East and reopening diplomatic channels between the involved parties.
