Google Takes AI to Space: Project Suncatcher Set for October 1 Launch

Computer-generated English audio

Google is preparing to take one of its most ambitious artificial intelligence experiments beyond Earth.

The company’s Project Suncatcher is scheduled to begin its first in-orbit test on October 1, 2026. The mission will send a prototype satellite carrying four Google Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, into low Earth orbit aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission.

The project is part of Google’s long-term research into whether artificial intelligence computing could eventually be performed in space using solar-powered satellites.

Rather than launching a commercial data center, Google is initially testing whether its AI hardware can survive and operate under the harsh conditions of space.

The prototype will face several challenges, including intense vibration during launch, radiation exposure and extreme thermal conditions.

Google has already conducted radiation and vibration tests on the ground. The orbital mission will provide data that cannot be completely replicated in laboratories.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is its use of solar power. Google says satellites in low Earth orbit can have access to near-constant sunlight, potentially allowing future computing platforms to generate significantly more solar energy than comparable systems on Earth.

The October mission is therefore less about immediately replacing terrestrial data centers and more about answering a fundamental question: Can AI computing reliably work in orbit?

If the answer is yes, Google could eventually explore larger networks of interconnected AI satellites.
