Mumbai–Pune Expressway Turns Into Parking Lot, Vehicles Stuck for Over 12 Hours After Gas Tanker Accident
Mumbai | Pune:
One of Maharashtra’s busiest lifelines, the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, witnessed unprecedented traffic chaos as thousands of vehicles remained stranded for more than 12 hours, turning the high-speed corridor into a virtual parking lot. The massive jam was triggered after a gas tanker overturned near the Khandala Ghat section, raising serious safety concerns and forcing authorities to halt traffic movement.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to official sources, the tanker—carrying highly flammable propylene gas—met with an accident near the Adoshi Tunnel on the Mumbai-bound lane. Following the mishap, gas leakage fears prompted emergency teams to immediately cordon off the affected stretch. As a precautionary measure, traffic on the expressway was either slowed or completely stopped for several hours.
Traffic Paralysed for Miles
Within a short time, the backlog stretched for several kilometres, affecting not just the expressway but also the old Mumbai–Pune highway, where diverted vehicles added to the congestion. Motorists reported that cars barely moved for hours, with many commuters stuck overnight in their vehicles.
“It felt like the expressway had completely shut down. There was no movement for hours,” said one stranded commuter.
Commuters Face Severe Hardship
The prolonged standstill caused severe inconvenience:
- Families with children and elderly passengers were stranded without food or water
- Lack of toilet facilities worsened the situation
- Several buses and emergency vehicles were caught in the gridlock
- Fuel shortages were reported in some vehicles due to prolonged idling
Social media was flooded with visuals showing endless rows of cars and trucks, with users describing the expressway as a “parking lot.”
Emergency Response and Restoration
Fire brigade teams, police, highway authorities, and disaster management units were deployed at the spot. Specialized equipment was brought in to safely remove the tanker and neutralize the risk posed by the leaked gas. After extensive safety checks, traffic movement was gradually restored in phases.
Officials stated that ensuring public safety was the top priority, which is why traffic clearance took longer than usual.
Authorities Issue Advisory
The traffic police advised commuters to:
- Avoid the Mumbai–Pune Expressway until normal traffic flow resumes
- Use alternate routes only if absolutely necessary
- Follow official traffic updates and advisories
A Wake-Up Call
The incident once again highlights the vulnerability of major highways to accidents involving hazardous materials and the urgent need for:
- Faster emergency response mechanisms
- Better traffic diversion planning
- Improved commuter facilities during prolonged disruptions
As normalcy slowly returns, thousands of commuters hope such a nightmare commute does not repeat on one of India’s most important expressways.
