Wangchuk, who has been in judicial custody since September 27, 2025, was escorted to the hospital by police personnel following directions issued by the Supreme Court of India. He underwent medical examination in the gastroenterology department for nearly one and a half hours before being taken back to the jail.
Ongoing Health Issues Raised Before Court
According to sources at AIIMS Jodhpur, Wangchuk has been suffering from stomach-related problems for some time. He had also visited the hospital a day earlier for diagnostic tests. Doctors are monitoring his condition, and a detailed medical report is being prepared as per court directions.
The Supreme Court is currently hearing a petition filed by Wangchuk’s wife, seeking proper medical care for him. During the proceedings, the apex court directed the Jodhpur jail administration to submit Wangchuk’s complete medical report by February 2.
Supreme Court Orders Specialist Examination
Taking note of Wangchuk’s complaints regarding his deteriorating health, the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered that he be examined by a specialist doctor. A bench comprising Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice P. B. Varale specifically directed jail authorities to ensure that Wangchuk receives medical evaluation from a gastroenterologist at a government hospital.
The court observed that when an inmate raises consistent health concerns, treatment must be provided strictly according to medical requirements rather than routine procedures. Sonam Wangchuk AIIMS Jodhpur.

Jail Authorities’ Submission and Objection by Defence
During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, representing the Rajasthan government, informed the court that Wangchuk had been examined by jail doctors 21 times over the past four months. He added that the most recent medical check-up was conducted on January 26.
However, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing on behalf of Wangchuk, strongly objected to this submission. He argued that despite multiple routine check-ups, Wangchuk continued to suffer from severe stomach pain, which he attributed to poor water quality and living conditions inside the jail.
Accepting the argument, the court emphasized that specialist treatment must be ensured based on the patient’s condition and directed authorities to take immediate and appropriate medical steps.

Medical Report Awaited
With Wangchuk’s health becoming a matter of judicial concern, the Supreme Court has sought a comprehensive medical report from AIIMS Jodhpur. The report is expected to play a crucial role in the court’s further consideration of the petition related to his health and custodial conditions. Sonam Wangchuk AIIMS Jodhpur,
