China’s LandSpace Faces Rocket Test Setback Amid Space Race

Beijing, August 16, 2025: China’s leading private rocket maker LandSpace Technology has confirmed a setback as its Zhuque-2E Y3 rocket suffered an anomaly shortly after launch from northwestern China.

The company announced on WeChat that it has begun a detailed investigation into the failure, though technical details remain undisclosed. The incident underscores setbacks facing China’s fast-emerging private space sector, even as it races head-to-head with global rivals.

LandSpace gained international recognition last year when its Zhuque-2 rocket became the world’s first methane-fueled launcher to successfully reach orbit, outpacing U.S. competitors such as SpaceX and Blue Origin in pioneering this promising technology.

While the Zhuque-2E Y3 faced difficulties, a previous variant—the Y2—achieved a successful test flight in May 2025, boosting LandSpace’s standing as a strong commercial contender.
