In a bold and fiery response, China has slammed U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for his recent warning of a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan, labeling his remarks as provocative and dangerous.
Speaking at the high-level Shangri-La Dialogue summit in Singapore, Hegseth did not mince words as he described China as a “real and potentially imminent threat” to regional peace. He urged Indo-Pacific allies to increase defense preparedness and likened the current threat level to pre-war Europe, where collective deterrence is the only answer to aggression.
“China is credibly preparing to use military force to change the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. We will not let that happen without consequence,” Hegseth declared.
He further emphasized that any attempt to take Taiwan by force would be met with devastating consequences, and reaffirmed America’s full commitment to defend the self-governed island.
🔥 China Fires Back
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a sharp rebuke to Hegseth’s statements, accusing him of “vilifying China” and promoting a “Cold War mindset” that seeks to divide the Indo-Pacific region.
“Taiwan is an internal affair. The United States is playing with fire and should stop before it’s too late,” the ministry said in a strongly worded statement.
Beijing also condemned U.S. military deployments in the South China Sea, labeling them as “provocations” and accusing Washington of being the primary destabilizing force in the region.
🌐 Tensions Escalate Amid Diplomatic Snub
China’s decision to send a lower-level delegation instead of its defense minister to the Shangri-La Dialogue was seen as a diplomatic snub and a signal of Beijing’s dissatisfaction with U.S. posturing.
Meanwhile, Hegseth continues to push for greater defense collaboration in the Indo-Pacific, urging allies like Japan, Australia, and India to invest more in surveillance, missile defense, and counterintelligence capabilities.
📌 Global Stakes Rising
The sharp exchange between the U.S. and China underscores the rising tensions over Taiwan and broader Indo-Pacific security. As geopolitical alliances shift and military build-ups continue, the region is bracing for what many fear could become the defining security flashpoint of the decade.
