Title: Panama President Reaffirms Control Over Canal Amid Trump’s Comments: A Look at Its Historic Journey

Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino has firmly responded to recent remarks by the former U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that the U.S. should reconsider control over the Panama Canal, citing concerns about foreign influence. Mulino countered by stating, “The canal is and will remain Panamanian,” emphasizing Panama’s sovereignty and the strategic importance of the waterway.

A Historic Journey: The Panama Canal’s Legacy

The Panama Canal, one of the most significant engineering feats in history, was completed in 1914 by the United States after years of arduous construction and challenges, including disease outbreaks and difficult terrain. The canal revolutionized global trade by providing a crucial link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, drastically reducing travel time for maritime trade.

For nearly 85 years, the canal remained under U.S. control, serving as a key military and economic asset. However, after decades of negotiations and nationalistic movements in Panama, the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, signed in 1977, paved the way for its transfer. The handover was completed on December 31, 1999, officially placing the canal under Panama’s administration.

Since the transfer, the Panama Canal has been managed by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), ensuring efficient operations and expansions to accommodate modern shipping demands, including the 2016 expansion project, which allowed larger vessels to pass through.

Political Reactions and Audit Measures

Despite Trump’s recent comments suggesting possible U.S. intervention, President Mulino reassured that the canal remains under Panamanian control, dismissing allegations of foreign interference, particularly from China. However, to address concerns, Panama has launched an audit into the operations of Hutchison Ports, a Hong Kong-based company managing ports at both ends of the canal.

The Canal Today: A Symbol of National Pride

Today, the Panama Canal remains a cornerstone of Panama’s economy, generating billions in revenue and providing jobs to thousands. It stands as a symbol of sovereignty and national pride for the country, with its strategic role in global trade remaining undisputed.

As geopolitical tensions rise, Panama continues to assert its authority over the canal, ensuring its neutrality and commitment to facilitating international commerce.
