A Storm Born in the Bay of Bengal

What began as a low-pressure system deep in the warm waters of the Bay of Bengal has now turned into one of the most powerful storms of the season — Cyclone Montha. Its name, ironically, means “fragrant flower” in Thai. But for the millions along India’s eastern coast, Montha has brought anything but fragrance — only fear, tears, and prayers.

Thousands Evacuated, Homes Left Behind

In Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Tamil Nadu, more than 80,000 residents have been evacuated from low-lying coastal villages. Families clutching their children and a few belongings are being moved to cyclone shelters as roaring winds lash through coconut trees and waves rise higher with each hour.

“We’ve never seen the sea this angry,” said Lakshmi Devi, a fisherwoman from Machilipatnam. “Our boats are gone. The nets are gone. We just hope our homes will still be standing when we return.”

The Fragrant Name, the Furious Reality

The name Montha, given by Thailand, symbolizes a beautiful flower — a sign of calm and grace. Yet nature has a cruel poetry of its own. This “beautiful flower” has turned into a storm of destruction, carrying winds over 120 km/h and torrential rains threatening to submerge entire villages.

“It feels like nature is testing our patience again,” murmured Rahul Naik, a schoolteacher from Srikakulam. “We rebuild after every storm, and every time, it takes away something we love.”

IMD Warnings and Government Response

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts Cyclone Montha will make landfall near Kakinada late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Red alerts have been issued for Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Telangana. NDRF rescue teams are stationed in vulnerable districts as strong winds and rain disrupt transport and power lines.

When the Sea Cries, So Do the People

As waves crash onto shores and winds howl through villages, one can’t help but feel the raw emotion that storms like Montha bring. The fear of losing homes, the memories tied to each brick, and the anxious waiting — it all paints a heartbreaking picture of human endurance.

“Nature gives us the sea to live by,” said Anil Kumar, a fisherman from Vizag, “but sometimes, it also reminds us how small we really are.”

A Prayer for the Morning After

When the storm finally passes, the real test will begin — rebuilding lives, repairing homes, restoring faith. Cyclone Montha may have a name that sounds gentle, but its impact is fierce and unforgettable. In its wake, it leaves behind not just debris — but stories of courage, loss, and hope.
