💥 “Why I Think ‘Literally’ Is the Most Overused Word Ever” 💥

What is a word you feel that too many people use?

Once a precise tool, now conversational filler — and why that matters.

Language is powerful. Each word carries shape, weight, and meaning — and when we overuse one, its shape blurs. For me, that culprit is literally.

Originally, literally was used to say that something happened exactly as described. Today it appears in everyday speech as an effortless intensifier: “I literally can’t even,” “I literally died laughing,” or “This is literally the best.” In most of those sentences, nothing literal happened — so the word becomes filler rather than emphasis.

Overusing a word flattens it. When everything is “literally,” nothing stands out.

Why does this matter? Because variety in language helps us be clearer and more expressive. Reach for sharper alternatives when you need real emphasis — words like truly, actually, or a strong verb that shows, not tells. Or skip the intensifier altogether and trust the sentence to do the work.

So next time you catch yourself saying “literally,” pause for a second. Is it literal — or is it lazy? Saving the word for moments that truly deserve it will make your language taste better. And hey — your listeners will thank you.
