Frozen Iranian assets and U.S.-Iran economic negotiations

WASHINGTON/TEHRAN, September 29, 2026: Frozen Iranian assets have become a major economic issue in the latest U.S.-Iran diplomatic effort, with Tehran seeking relief as part of a wider proposal.

Reuters reported that Iran’s latest seven-day proposal includes unfreezing Iranian assets and lifting sanctions on Iranian oil. The proposal also calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear negotiations.

Why the assets matter

Access to restricted funds could provide Iran with additional economic liquidity. For Washington, however, any release of assets would be connected to broader negotiations and conditions.

The exact amount and mechanism for any release remain matters for negotiation. President Donald Trump has separately denied that he offered Iran sanctions relief and frozen funds for nuclear concessions.
