NEW YORK, September 29, 2026: Qatar and Pakistan are playing important intermediary roles as the United States and Iran seek a possible diplomatic path out of their confrontation.
Reuters reported that U.S. and Iranian officials separately engaged with mediators over an amended version of Iran’s seven-day proposal. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has been involved in discussions with Qatari mediators.
The talks cover several linked issues, including ending hostilities, sanctions on Iranian oil, frozen assets, the Strait of Hormuz and renewed negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
Why mediation matters
Indirect channels allow Washington and Tehran to exchange proposals while major disagreements remain. The mediators’ role is to clarify positions and carry responses between the sides.
