Fincantieri Shipyard Accident in Italy Leaves One Worker Dead and Another Critically Injured

ANCONA — One worker died and another was critically injured after a fire broke out at a Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy, during welding work on a vessel. Police and the shipbuilder said the incident occurred late Tuesday, while unions called for stronger workplace-safety measures.

What happened

The two workers were employed by a subcontractor carrying out welding operations. A fire broke out while the work was underway. One worker suffered severe burns and later died, while the second was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Investigation begins

Police are investigating the cause of the fire. Local unions said they were examining whether a welding-machine fault may have contributed, although investigators had not reached a final conclusion.

Subcontracting under scrutiny

The workers’ employment through a subcontractor has drawn attention from labour unions. Unions said workplace accidents can become more difficult to prevent when several companies operate on the same industrial site.

Union response

Italy’s major metalworkers’ unions organised an immediate strike at the shipyard. National unions also called for a wider stoppage across Fincantieri facilities.

Why shipyard work is risky

Shipbuilding involves welding, heavy machinery, confined spaces, electrical systems, lifting equipment and combustible materials. Safety procedures must coordinate many workers and contractors operating simultaneously.

Training and protective equipment

Unions called for greater investment in worker training and protective equipment. Such measures are designed to reduce the likelihood and severity of industrial accidents.

Fincantieri response

The shipbuilder confirmed that both workers were employed by a subcontractor and expressed its position that the investigation should establish what happened.

Economic importance

Fincantieri is one of Italy’s major shipbuilders, operating large industrial facilities and employing workers directly and through contractors. The company builds commercial and naval vessels.

What investigators will examine

Investigators are expected to examine the welding equipment, work permits, fire-safety procedures, protective equipment, training records and conditions at the time of the accident.

What happens next

The final investigation will determine the cause and whether any safety rules were breached. Labour authorities may also assess workplace practices at the site.
