Worker Killed at Chile’s Radomiro Tomic Mine, Codelco Suspends Part of Operations

CHILE: A worker has died in an accident at Chilean state-owned miner Codelco’s Radomiro Tomic mine, prompting a partial suspension of operations.

Accident occurred during maintenance

Mining regulator Sernageomin confirmed the death. Codelco said the victim was a mechanic carrying out maintenance in the crushing and material-handling area when the accident occurred at around 8:50 a.m.

The company suspended activity in the affected section while the incident is investigated.

Mining safety receives renewed attention

The fatality follows another recent worker death at BHP’s Escondida mine in northern Chile. Investigations will be important in determining causes and any necessary safety changes.
