Spain Approves Housing Measures as Rent Crisis Drives Snap Election Campaign

MADRID: Spain’s government has approved two major housing decrees that sit at the centre of the country’s sudden election campaign, days after parliament’s rejection of the measures prompted Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to call a snap vote.

The package includes rent controls, temporary protections against evictions and restrictions on some corporate purchases of residential property.

Housing becomes the election battleground

Sánchez argues that intervention is necessary to protect vulnerable households and tackle what he describes as a dysfunctional housing market. Opponents have challenged both the policy design and the government’s broader economic approach.

Housing affordability has become one of Spain’s most politically sensitive issues, particularly in large cities and tourist-heavy regions where residents have complained about rising rents and limited supply.

Why the decrees matter

The measures are now more than a policy dispute: they have become a defining issue in an election that could reshape Spain’s government. Renters, property owners, investors and regional governments will all be watching how the rules are implemented and debated during the campaign.

What voters will decide

The election will test whether public frustration over housing translates into support for stronger market intervention or a political shift toward alternative solutions focused on supply, taxation and regulation.
