London’s Fazl Mosque Turns 100: A Century of Faith, Community and Service

LONDON: The Fazl Mosque in Wandsworth is celebrating 100 years since its opening, turning attention to a remarkable chapter in the history of Muslims in Britain.

The mosque, associated with the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, opened in 1926 and has remained a distinctive religious landmark in south London. The Guardian reports that the building was granted listed status by Historic England in 2018 and has served purposes extending far beyond daily worship.

A mosque woven into local history

During the Second World War, the mosque was used as an air-raid shelter. In more recent times it has hosted blood donation activity and Covid-19 vaccinations. Community representatives describe service to neighbours and interfaith solidarity as central to its public role.

The story of its founding also reflects transnational Muslim history. Funding for the land was supported by Ahmadi Muslims from Qadian in India, including women who sold jewellery to help establish the mosque even though many were unlikely ever to visit London.

Centenary marked through service

Organisers are presenting the anniversary as a “century of connection.” Plans include providing thousands of meals to homeless people, reinforcing the idea that a mosque’s contribution can include social service as well as prayer and religious education.

The centenary arrives at a time when debates over immigration, religious identity and Islamophobia remain prominent across Europe. Against that backdrop, the mosque’s long presence offers a historical reminder that organised Muslim life in Britain is not a new phenomenon.

Its anniversary is therefore both a religious milestone and a story about how faith institutions become part of the civic landscape over generations.
