NEW YORK: The Rohingya crisis is again receiving high-level attention in the Muslim world, with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation calling for stronger international coordination and a comprehensive political solution.

At meetings around the United Nations General Assembly, the OIC renewed support for Rohingya Muslims and called for restoration of their rights, including full citizenship, protection of Muslim communities and conditions for a voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return to homes in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

Why the crisis remains unresolved

Large numbers of Rohingya remain displaced, with Bangladesh carrying a major humanitarian burden by hosting refugees. Years after mass displacement drew worldwide condemnation, the central problems of citizenship, security and accountability remain unresolved.

The OIC has praised Bangladesh for hosting refugees and The Gambia for pursuing a case concerning Myanmar at the International Court of Justice. Those diplomatic and legal tracks are important, but neither substitutes for conditions on the ground that would allow refugees to return safely.

Safe return cannot mean forced return

International discussions repeatedly emphasise that repatriation must be voluntary and sustainable. Refugees need confidence that they will have legal status, physical security, access to basic services and protection from renewed persecution.

The crisis also illustrates the limits of humanitarian aid without a political settlement. Food, shelter and education can reduce suffering, but long-term displacement creates new generations who grow up without a durable home or citizenship.

For the wider Muslim world, the Rohingya issue remains both a humanitarian concern and a test of international institutions. The renewed OIC push aims to keep the crisis from fading from the diplomatic agenda while wars elsewhere compete for global attention.
