SEOUL: South Korea is investigating whether artificial intelligence was used in a series of cyberattacks against major banks, raising concern that AI tools are making sophisticated hacking techniques easier to automate.

President Lee Jae Myung said signs of AI use had emerged in some recent hacking incidents and called on officials to establish the facts quickly while concentrating resources on limiting damage.

Banks report cyberattacks

South Korean authorities have opened a broad investigation after commercial banks reported attacks and breaches involving customer information. Financial regulators and police are examining the scope of the incidents and the methods used.

Officials have not yet publicly established exactly which AI tools were involved or the full extent of the compromised data.

Why AI changes the cyber threat

AI systems can help attackers scan for vulnerabilities, generate code, automate reconnaissance and adapt techniques faster. The same technologies are also increasingly used by defenders to detect suspicious behaviour and respond to attacks.

The incidents therefore highlight a growing global challenge: banks and governments must strengthen security at the same pace that automated offensive tools evolve.

South Korea’s next step

Lee called for cybersecurity methods suited to the AI era, signalling that the investigation may lead to stronger standards for financial institutions and greater investment in automated defence.
