JERUSALEM: Al-Aqsa Mosque is again at the centre of international concern after major Muslim institutions warned about developments at the compound during the Jewish holiday period.

Al-Azhar said it was alarmed by what it described as escalating incursions into the courtyards of Al-Aqsa under security protection. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has issued a similar warning, calling for preservation of the site’s existing historical and legal status quo.

Why Al-Aqsa matters globally

Al-Aqsa is Islam’s third-holiest mosque and has enormous religious importance for Muslims worldwide. The wider compound is also sacred in Judaism, where it is known as the Temple Mount. That overlapping religious significance makes changes in access, prayer practices or administration exceptionally sensitive.

Disputes at the site can quickly extend beyond Jerusalem because they touch faith, Palestinian national identity, Israeli security policy and the wider Arab and Muslim world’s relationship with the city.

Calls for restraint

Muslim organisations have urged international actors to prevent steps they believe could alter long-standing arrangements. Israeli authorities and Jewish groups have their own legal, historical and religious arguments concerning access to the compound, making precise reporting essential.

The immediate issue is whether the current period passes without a larger confrontation. The broader question is whether political leaders can protect freedom of worship while preventing symbolic acts at a sacred site from becoming triggers for regional violence.

For readers following developments in the Islamic world, Al-Aqsa remains one of the most consequential religious and political flashpoints. Statements from governments and religious institutions are likely to remain closely watched in the days ahead.
