The Brotherhood of the Macarena announced Tuesday that the 17th-century statue of the Virgin of Hope Macarena will be temporarily withdrawn from public veneration for a comprehensive restoration following months of controversy over a prior maintenance intervention that altered the statue’s appearance.

From Routine Maintenance to Public Outcry

In June 2025, a maintenance effort led by external conservators produced visible changes to the Virgin’s face—most notably longer eyelashes and a lighter facial tone—that many devotees said made the image look unfamiliar. The reaction was immediate: visitors and parishioners crowded the Basilica of La Macarena to voice their distress, while the story spread quickly across Spanish and international media.

Within 24 hours, the Brotherhood issued a public apology and attempted emergency corrections. But the controversy had already escalated: the incident drew comparisons to earlier high-profile restoration mishaps in Spain and prompted intense debate about conservation standards, cultural stewardship, and respect for devotional sentiment.

Leadership Changes and Expert Review

The fallout led to the resignation of several senior Brotherhood officials. In the weeks that followed, the statue was transferred to the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage (IAPH) for detailed technical examination. That assessment revealed important structural problems—among them a crack across the facial polychrome and evidence of woodworm infestations—making a deeper restoration necessary.

A Careful, Scientific Restoration

Acclaimed restorer Pedro Manzano has been appointed to lead the new project, which will be carried out with oversight from IAPH and in coordination with the Brotherhood. Manzano has emphasized the need to balance devotional familiarity with best-practice conservation.

Key elements of the restoration will include structural stabilization of the wooden core, an anoxia treatment to eradicate biological pests, and careful color‑work to preserve the Virgin’s traditional expression. The anoxia process will be performed in sealed chambers by a specialist firm working within the Brotherhood’s facilities.

Devotional and Civic Significance

The Virgin of Hope Macarena is more than an artwork: she is a living emblem of Seville’s identity and an indispensable presence during Semana Santa (Holy Week). Hundreds of thousands of worshippers and onlookers gather each year to see the Virgin’s procession. The temporary absence of the statue has prompted a wave of emotion across the city and the international community that follows Seville’s religious calendar.

“We understand the pain of her temporary absence,” the Brotherhood said in a statement. “This restoration is an act of responsibility and love, intended to preserve the Virgin for future generations.”

What to Expect Next

Officials say the restoration will be thorough and may last several months. While some hope the work can be completed before next year’s key religious observances, experts warn that high-quality conservation should not be rushed to meet ritual timetables. The Brotherhood has pledged regular public updates as the work progresses.

As Seville waits for the Virgin’s return, the restoration will be closely watched by conservators, clergy, and devotees alike—an intersection of faith, heritage and modern conservation practice.
