WASHINGTON: US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito says the court has little power to stop the growing flood of emergency appeals reaching the justices and has also expressed concern about increasingly heated political rhetoric surrounding the institution.

Emergency docket keeps expanding

Alito said emergency applications now compete with fully argued cases for the court’s attention. Many involve high-profile disputes over executive power, elections and government policy.

He also said rhetoric from political leaders, including President Donald Trump, can affect public perceptions of the judiciary, while rejecting the idea that his own decisions are driven by partisan loyalty.
