China Heads Toward Rare Net Zinc Exporter Status as Global Supply Gap Widens

Zinc metal and industrial production in China

BEIJING/LONDON: China is moving toward becoming a net annual exporter of refined zinc as rising domestic production and weak construction demand coincide with shortages in Western markets.

Exports surge into LME warehouses

China exported 40,668 metric tons of zinc in August, Reuters reported, the second-highest monthly level in nearly two decades. Shipments have flowed into London Metal Exchange warehouses in Hong Kong, Singapore and Kaohsiung.

The shift highlights a widening East-West divide in metals production. Western smelters are struggling with high energy and raw-material costs while China’s supply remains comparatively abundant.
