BRUSSELS: France and Germany have proposed a rapid-response trade mechanism for the European Union as concern grows over Chinese subsidies, dumping and dependence on critical supplies.

China trade debate heads toward EU summit

President Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged the European Commission to act more quickly against systemic market distortions. The proposal does not formally name a target country, but China is widely seen as its main focus.

The two governments also want tools to reduce dependence on single-source suppliers and potentially restrict EU market access where unfair practices undermine competition.
