PARIS: French government bonds rallied after Marine Le Pen, the National Rally candidate considered a frontrunner for next year’s presidential election, outlined plans to reduce government spending.

Fiscal policy moves to centre of election campaign

France has faced persistent investor concerns over public finances, inflation and borrowing costs. Le Pen’s budget proposals were therefore closely watched by markets, with bond yields easing after her spending-cut commitments were presented.

The market reaction does not remove France’s longer-term fiscal challenges, but it shows how economic policy is becoming a central issue ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
