New York: US and Iranian negotiators are exploring a phased arrangement aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and creating a possible path toward ending the confrontation between the two countries, according to sources cited by Reuters.
The discussions are focused on linking the reopening of the strategically important waterway with steps by Washington to ease its economic blockade of Iran. The Strait of Hormuz is a major route for global energy shipments, making any prolonged disruption important for oil markets and international trade.
Why the Strait matters
The waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes. Restrictions on shipping through the strait have increased concerns among governments, shipping companies and energy markets.
Negotiations remain difficult
Reuters reported that neither side wants to give up its negotiating leverage first. Iranian and Western sources described the talks as complicated, with economic pressure and shipping access at the centre of the discussions.
Any agreement would need to establish how and when restrictions on shipping are lifted and what commitments each side would make. The discussions were still ongoing and no final agreement had been announced.
