US forces have completed their withdrawal from Iraq, closing a major chapter in America’s military presence in the country after more than two decades.
Reuters reported that the final withdrawal took place on September 30. The US military had continued to provide training, intelligence and surveillance support during the campaign against Islamic State.
Security questions remain
The withdrawal was agreed in 2024 and implemented under the Trump administration. Iraqi officials and analysts are now focused on whether domestic security forces can maintain intelligence and counterterrorism capabilities without the same level of US support.
Iranian-backed armed groups and Islamic State sleeper cells remain part of the wider regional security picture.
