Oil markets and Strait of Hormuz amid U.S.-Iran talks

LONDON/DUBAI, September 29, 2026: Global energy markets are closely watching renewed U.S.-Iran diplomacy as negotiators discuss the Strait of Hormuz alongside sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program.

The waterway is a critical route for international energy shipments. Disruption can raise concerns about supply, tanker availability, insurance and transportation costs.

Diplomacy could affect market expectations

Any credible progress toward reopening the Strait could reduce concerns about prolonged disruption. Conversely, a breakdown in talks could renew uncertainty for energy traders and shipping companies.

Reuters reported that Iran’s latest proposal links reopening the waterway to sanctions relief, frozen assets and renewed nuclear negotiations.
