BEIJING/GENEVA: China is preparing to put forward a late candidate in the race to lead the World Health Organization, a move that could expand Beijing’s influence in global health governance as the United States reduces its engagement with the organisation.
A wider contest over global institutions
Diplomatic sources cited by Reuters said the planned candidacy comes as China seeks a larger role across United Nations agencies and other multilateral institutions. The leadership contest will be closely watched because the WHO remains central to international disease surveillance, emergency coordination and health policy.
A Chinese candidacy could also turn the selection process into a wider debate over the future balance of influence inside global institutions.
