WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2026: The US Army has set an execution date for Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting, with the sentence scheduled to be carried out by firing squad.

A rare military execution

If carried out, the execution would be the first by the US military in more than six decades, making the case a major development in the military justice system. Hasan was convicted in connection with the November 2009 attack at Fort Hood, Texas, now known as Fort Cavazos.

The shooting killed 13 people and wounded dozens of others. The case has remained one of the most consequential acts of violence on a US military installation in modern American history.

Legal process remains closely watched

Military death-penalty cases involve extensive review, and execution dates can generate additional litigation. The announcement is therefore an important procedural step, while any subsequent court action could still affect the timeline.

The use of a firing squad also makes the case unusual at a time when execution methods are the subject of legal and ethical debate across the United States.
