WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2026: President Donald Trump’s administration has announced or begun distributing billions of dollars in benefits to groups of Americans just weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, drawing fresh attention to the intersection of federal policy and campaign politics.

$90 payments for some Medicare enrollees

The government plans one-time $90 payments to about 20.8 million people enrolled in Medicare Part B. The White House says the payments are intended to offset healthcare costs. Eligibility is limited, meaning most Medicare recipients will not receive the money.

$500 payments for some ACA marketplace users

The administration has also sent $500 payments to about 950,000 people who buy insurance through the federal HealthCare.gov marketplace. Reuters reported that many eligible recipients live in states with competitive Senate or gubernatorial contests.

Trump has separately proposed a much larger $5,000 payment for US adult citizens if Republicans retain Congress, but that proposal would require congressional approval and has not become law.

Alaska infrastructure funding also announced

The administration announced $150 million for Alaska power lines as Vice President JD Vance campaigned in the state. Plans for a liquefied natural gas pipeline have also been promoted, though important details remain unresolved.
