Trump Returns to Texas as Republicans Fight Unexpectedly Tight 2026 Midterm Races

WASHINGTON/SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 7, 2026: President Donald Trump is putting unusual campaign attention on Texas, returning to the state for the third time in a month as Republicans try to protect races that have become far more competitive than party leaders once expected.

Why Texas matters in the 2026 midterms

Trump is due to campaign in San Antonio alongside Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, who is locked in a closely watched contest with Democrat James Talarico. Texas has long been a Republican stronghold, and Trump carried the state comfortably in the 2024 presidential election. But recent polling and heavy campaign spending show that Republicans are no longer treating the state as automatic territory.

The battle has national consequences. Control of Congress is at stake on November 3, and an upset in a traditionally Republican state could complicate the party’s effort to hold its Senate majority. Competitive House districts in South Texas are adding to the pressure.

Cost of living and Iran war weigh on voters

Economic anxiety and the continuing Iran conflict have become major campaign issues. A Reuters/Ipsos poll cited by Reuters put Trump’s approval at 32%, while Democrats led Republicans among registered voters nationally. The same polling showed weaker approval among Hispanic voters, a particularly important bloc in Texas.

Trump’s campaign is betting that his rallies can still mobilize the voters who powered his 2024 victory. At the same time, his presence can sharpen partisan divisions, making Texas a useful test of the political mood before Election Day.
