Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Thirty-eight passengers escaped a potentially serious road tragedy after the front wheel of a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus reportedly detached while the vehicle was moving near Old Kaygaon on Saturday afternoon.

The bus belonged to Shirur depot in Pune district and was travelling on the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar-Pune route. Despite the alarming mechanical failure, a larger accident was avoided and the passengers survived the incident.

Two technicians suspended pending inquiry

MSRTC responded by suspending two assistant technicians in the mechanical section pending a departmental inquiry, according to a report published Sunday. The inquiry will be important in establishing whether the wheel separation resulted from maintenance failure, component damage or another technical cause.

Public transport maintenance under focus

The incident raises a wider passenger-safety question. State transport buses cover long distances every day and often operate under demanding road and weather conditions. Preventive maintenance, wheel assembly checks, tyre inspection and documented pre-departure checks are therefore critical safeguards.

Suspension pending inquiry should not be interpreted as a final finding of responsibility. The departmental process must determine the technical sequence and whether prescribed inspection procedures were followed.
