MUMBAI: The southwest monsoon has begun withdrawing from Maharashtra earlier than usual, leaving 21 districts with deficient rainfall and sharpening concerns over water availability and agriculture.
Statewide rainfall 19% below average
Maharashtra received 804.4 mm of rainfall between June 1 and September 30 against a seasonal average of 994.5 mm, a shortfall of about 19%. Because the deficit remains just within the meteorological threshold used for the “normal” category, the statewide classification does not fully reflect the sharp regional variation.
Districts including Nagpur, Chandrapur and Beed are among those facing significant deficits, while some areas such as Nashik and Palghar recorded surplus rainfall.
Uneven monsoon creates uneven risk
The key challenge now is not simply the statewide percentage but reservoir storage, groundwater and crop conditions district by district. The early retreat could increase pressure during the rabi season and summer of 2027.
