France Student Protests Escalate as Paris Police Chief Appeals for Peaceful Demonstrations

PARIS: France’s student protest movement has intensified, with Paris police chief Patrice Faure urging demonstrators to return to peaceful action as unrest spreads over school conditions, teacher shortages and deteriorating facilities.

Thousands detained during unrest

Reuters reported that about 5,000 people, many of them teenagers, have been arrested since Monday. Hundreds of police officers have been injured and property damage has been reported in several locations.

A national demonstration called by student unions is planned, while authorities say they are preparing for the possibility of further disorder.

Education grievances remain at centre

Behind the security concerns are longstanding complaints about staffing and conditions in schools. The government faces pressure both to maintain public order and to address the issues driving the demonstrations.
