Trump-Xi Summit: US and China Extend Trade Truce as AI and Taiwan Remain Key Issues

Washington: US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the White House on Thursday as Washington and Beijing sought to keep their economic relationship stable while continuing to disagree over artificial intelligence, technology controls and Taiwan.

According to Reuters, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two countries had agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months. The extension keeps the current arrangement in place while giving negotiators additional time to discuss tariffs, Chinese purchases, rare-earth supplies and technology restrictions.

Trade remains at the centre

The meeting came against the backdrop of continuing competition between the world’s two largest economies. Both governments have an interest in avoiding a renewed escalation in tariffs, while several difficult economic issues remain unresolved.

AI and technology also discussed

Artificial intelligence was another major subject. The two sides have different approaches to advanced technology and controls on sensitive equipment. Xi has called for AI development to remain under human control, while the Trump administration has emphasised rapid technological development and US leadership.

Taiwan remains a sensitive issue

Taiwan was also part of the broader strategic discussion. Beijing continues to oppose Taiwanese independence, while Washington maintains its own policy toward Taiwan and continues to assess arms sales and security commitments.

The summit did not produce a comprehensive settlement of the major differences between Washington and Beijing, but the continuation of talks keeps diplomatic and economic channels open.
