Washington: US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Washington this week as the world’s two largest economies continued talks over trade, technology and broader strategic relations.
Xi’s state visit to the United States ran from September 23 to September 25 at Trump’s invitation. The meeting came amid continuing competition over tariffs, advanced technology, artificial intelligence and access to critical supply chains.
Trade remains a major issue
Washington and Beijing have been trying to prevent a fresh escalation in their trade dispute while negotiating several unresolved economic issues. The talks also involve rare-earth supplies and technology restrictions.
Technology and global issues
Artificial intelligence and advanced technology have become increasingly important areas of US-China competition. Both governments are also dealing with wider international security and economic issues.
The meeting is part of continuing diplomatic engagement between the two countries rather than a complete resolution of their differences.
