Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: An official investigation has begun into allegations of financial irregularities estimated at around ₹50 crore at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), bringing procurement, expenditure and administrative accountability at one of the region’s major public healthcare institutions under scrutiny.
The inquiry is examining financial records and procurement-related processes to determine whether public funds were handled in accordance with applicable rules. At this stage, the figures represent allegations under investigation rather than established wrongdoing.
Why the inquiry matters
GMCH serves a large population from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and surrounding Marathwada districts. Questions involving procurement or financial management at a public hospital therefore have consequences beyond accounting: inefficient spending can affect equipment, medicines, infrastructure and patient services.
A credible inquiry will need to establish what purchases or transactions are in question, which rules applied, whether competitive procedures were followed, and whether the public exchequer suffered any actual loss. Responsibility should be assigned only after evidence is examined.
Transparency will be key
For public confidence, authorities should make verified findings available once the inquiry reaches an appropriate stage. Until then, claims against individuals should not be treated as proven facts.
