Mumbai/Jalna, Special Correspondent: A controversy has emerged over the saffron-coloured outfit worn by Deepika Padukone in a song from the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan film King. Some religious figures have objected to the scene, recalling the earlier debate over the song Besharam Rang from Pathaan.
Objections to the costume
According to media reports, religious leaders have described saffron as a symbol of sacrifice and devotion and called for changes to the scene. Disagreement with artistic choices, however, does not justify threats or violence against performers.
The nation gave both stars their highest recognition
“The people of this nation have given both Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone immense love, respect, fame and an extraordinary position in the film industry. Shah Rukh Khan is not regarded as the hero of any one religion or community; he is considered a hero of the entire nation. Therefore, he should show equal love and respect towards all religions, communities and citizens. When the people of India have elevated these stars to such heights, respecting their faith and sentiments becomes a moral responsibility,” said Advocate Mahesh Dhannawat.
He added that Deepika should have exercised greater caution given her experience of the previous Pathaan controversy. In his view, artistic freedom should be accompanied by sensitivity towards the beliefs of all communities.
Gauri Khan should consider intervening
Adv. Dhannawat suggested that Gauri Khan discuss with the film’s creative team whether the outfit’s colour could be altered. Modern digital colour grading and visual effects can sometimes make such adjustments possible, depending on the footage and the filmmakers’ decisions.
Dialogue, not intimidation
India’s Constitution protects both freedom of expression and freedom of religion. Wearing a colour associated with a religious tradition does not by itself establish an unlawful insult; the context of the scene and applicable legal standards matter. Adv. Dhannawat urged mutual respect, religious harmony and national unity, and called for dialogue rather than threats.
