The US Supreme Court has temporarily allowed the Trump administration to use an expanded federal voter eligibility database while a legal challenge proceeds.

Associated Press reported that the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database can be used to help states identify possible noncitizens on voter rolls, although states are not required to participate.

Privacy and accuracy questions remain

The case concerns claims that expanded use of the system could incorrectly flag eligible voters. The Supreme Court’s temporary order does not resolve the underlying legal dispute.

Election officials are watching the case because voter-roll maintenance is governed by federal and state laws that impose different requirements close to elections.
