In a devastating accident that shook Guatemala, at least 51 people lost their lives on Monday when a bus veered off a bridge and plunged into a ravine in Guatemala City. Emergency responders described it as one of the worst road disasters the country has witnessed in years.
A Tragic Fall from Puente Belice
The overcrowded bus was en route to the capital from San Agustin Acasaguastlan, navigating a busy highway when it crashed through a guardrail on Puente Belice—a critical bridge spanning a road and creek—before plummeting approximately 20 meters below.
Rescue teams worked tirelessly at the crash site, where bodies of 51 victims were recovered. According to fire department spokesperson Carlos Hernandez, among the deceased were 36 men and 15 women, with their remains transported to a specially designated morgue.
Horrific Scene Captured
Images shared by emergency services on social media depicted the wreckage of the bus partially submerged in wastewater, surrounded by lifeless bodies, illustrating the scale of the catastrophe.
National Mourning Declared
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo expressed his profound sorrow over the tragic loss and announced three days of national mourning. In response to the disaster, he also mobilized the army and national disaster agency to assist in rescue and recovery operations.
“I stand in solidarity with the families of the victims who today woke up to heartbreaking news. Their pain is my pain,” President Arevalo conveyed in a heartfelt message on social media.
