China has opened its northernmost high-speed railway line in Heilongjiang province, extending the country’s high-speed rail network into a challenging northern environment.
The Harbin-Yichun high-speed railway officially entered service on September 28. Xinhua’s photo report showed passengers at Yichunxi Railway Station following the opening.
Engineering challenge
The line passes through an area affected by discontinuous permafrost, creating additional engineering requirements for railway construction and maintenance.
The new connection is expected to improve transport links in northeastern China and provide additional support for tourism, regional commerce and local mobility.
