China has marked the 2,577th anniversary of Confucius’ birth with a ceremony in Qufu, Shandong, bringing together cultural traditions and modern public interest in the philosopher’s legacy.

The ceremony was held in Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, on September 28. Xinhua reported the anniversary as part of China’s cultural calendar.

Qufu remains a major cultural centre

Confucius’ ideas have influenced education, ethics and political philosophy across East Asia for centuries. Events in Qufu regularly combine historical ceremonies with cultural tourism and educational programmes.

The anniversary arrives during a period when domestic and international tourism is receiving increased attention ahead of China’s extended National Day holiday.
