Aden: Yemen’s internationally recognised government has announced a major military campaign aimed at retaking territory controlled by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, marking a sharp escalation after renewed fighting around Taiz and the Red Sea corridor.
Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, said the operation seeks to recover remaining Houthi-held areas. The announcement follows recent Houthi advances, including strategically important territory near the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb shipping route.
Strategic shipping corridor in focus
The Bab el-Mandeb connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is a critical route for international shipping. Renewed fighting has therefore raised concerns well beyond Yemen.
Houthi forces have separately claimed missile and drone attacks on Saudi targets. Such battlefield claims can be difficult to independently verify in real time.
