MEKELLE: Ethiopian federal forces have regained control of Alula Aba Nega Airport in Tigray’s capital Mekelle, according to sources cited by Reuters, as renewed fighting raises fears of a broader conflict in the Horn of Africa.
Major escalation after years of fragile peace
The latest clashes involve a rebel alliance led by Tigrayan forces and the Ethiopian government and its allies. The airport had been seized by opposition forces when fighting intensified in late September.
Reuters reported that government troops and allied forces were surrounding Mekelle, while gunfire and looting were reported in parts of the city. Some claims could not be independently verified.
Regional powers watch closely
Ethiopia has accused Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of supporting its opponents; those countries deny the allegations. The United States has urged restraint and a return to dialogue.
