Mumbai: The skyline is turning hazier as Mumbai moves out of the rainy season. The city’s overall Air Quality Index crossed 100 in the first notable post-monsoon deterioration of the season, bringing dust and construction pollution back into focus.
According to Central Pollution Control Board data cited by The Indian Express, Mumbai’s AQI reached 111 on Friday afternoon, while Worli recorded 178 and several other stations entered the moderate range. Reduced rainfall means fewer natural washouts of suspended dust, while changing wind patterns can add to the problem.
BMC orders hotspot monitoring
The civic body has issued fresh ward-level procedures. Each ward is expected to identify at least 10 pollution hotspots, assign monitoring officers and inspect construction activity. Dust control at demolition and construction sites is a particular focus.
The shift matters because Mumbai is entering the part of the year when dry conditions, road dust and construction can combine to worsen particulate pollution.
What residents should watch
AQI can change substantially by neighbourhood and hour. People with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions should rely on current official readings when planning strenuous outdoor activity rather than assuming one citywide number applies everywhere.
