Raj Ghat in New Delhi marks the place where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on 31 January 1948. The memorial has since become a major site of remembrance.
From cremation ground to memorial
Gandhi’s cremation took place on the banks of the Yamuna. The Gandhi Heritage Portal’s Gandhi Smriti Darshan account records that a black marble platform was later built at the cremation site.
The memorial’s design
The central memorial is deliberately simple. A black marble platform bears Gandhi’s name and a traditional inscription associated with his final moments.
Raj Ghat and national remembrance
Raj Ghat became a place where Indian leaders, foreign dignitaries and ordinary visitors could pay their respects. It is also associated with official commemorative events.
Connected Gandhi sites in Delhi
Gandhi’s final residence, Birla House, is now Gandhi Smriti. The Gandhi Heritage Portal notes that Gandhi stayed there for the final 144 days of his life and held daily evening prayers there.
A historical landscape
Together, Gandhi Smriti and Raj Ghat form an important part of Delhi’s Gandhi heritage, connecting the final months of his life with the site of his cremation.
