30 January 1948 was Mahatma Gandhi’s final day. He spent the morning working and meeting people before attending his regular evening prayer gathering at Birla House in New Delhi.
His final morning
Gandhi continued his correspondence and meetings as he had done during his final months. He was also working on plans for social and communal reconciliation.
The evening prayer meeting
At about 5 p.m., Gandhi walked toward the prayer meeting accompanied by members of his household and colleagues. Nathuram Godse approached him and shot him at close range.
National mourning
News of Gandhi’s assassination spread rapidly across India and around the world. His funeral drew enormous crowds in Delhi.
Raj Ghat
Gandhi’s cremation site on the banks of the Yamuna became Raj Ghat, one of India’s best-known memorial sites.

Gandhi’s legacy has been interpreted in many ways, encompassing nonviolent resistance, political mobilisation, social reform, religious pluralism, village development and ethical self-discipline.
