Gandhi Smriti, formerly Birla House, is one of the most important places associated with the final chapter of Mahatma Gandhi’s life. Gandhi stayed there during the final months before his assassination on 30 January 1948.
Gandhi’s final stay
Gandhi lived at Birla House from September 1947 until his death. During this period he focused heavily on communal peace and reconciliation.
The prayer meetings
Gandhi regularly held evening prayer meetings on the grounds. People from different communities attended, and the meetings became an important part of his daily routine.
30 January 1948
Gandhi was walking to his evening prayer meeting when he was assassinated. The spot where he fell is marked today as Martyr’s Column.
A museum and memorial
The building is now a memorial museum documenting Gandhi’s final years, his correspondence and his approach to peace and communal harmony.
