🌿 Major Sufi Silsilas (Spiritual Orders) and Their Chains

1. Chishti Silsila (چشتیہ سلسلہ)

  • Origin: Khwaja Abu Ishaq Shami (d. 940 CE, Chisht, Afghanistan)
  • Famous Saints: Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, Baba Farid, Nizamuddin Auliya
  • Key Teachings: Love, tolerance, service to humanity, music (sama)

2. Qadiri Silsila (قادریہ سلسلہ)

  • Founder: Abdul Qadir Jilani (Baghdad, d. 1166 CE)
  • Famous Saints: Mian Mir, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Waris Ali Shah
  • Key Teachings: Simplicity, humility, strict adherence to Sharia

3. Naqshbandi Silsila (نقشبندیہ سلسلہ)

  • Founder: Bahauddin Naqshband Bukhari (Bukhara, d. 1389 CE)
  • Chain Origin: Traced through Abu Bakr (RA)
  • Famous Saints: Mujaddid Alf Sani, Shah Waliullah Dehlavi
  • Key Teachings: Silent dhikr, Sharia, inner purity

4. Suhrawardi Silsila (سہروردیہ سلسلہ)

  • Founder: Shahabuddin Suhrawardi (Baghdad, d. 1234 CE)
  • Famous Saints: Bahauddin Zakariya, Jalaluddin Surkh-Posh Bukhari
  • Key Teachings: Balance of Sharia and Haqiqa, social service

5. Shattari Silsila (شطاریہ سلسلہ)

  • Introduced in India by: Abdullah Shattari (15th century)
  • Famous Saints: Muhammad Ghaus Gwaliori, Tansen (indirectly)
  • Key Teachings: Esoteric practices, rapid spiritual progress

6. Rifa’i Silsila (رفاعیہ سلسلہ)

  • Founder: Ahmad al-Rifa’i (Iraq, 12th century)
  • Known For: Ecstatic rituals, miraculous acts

7. Kubrawiyya Silsila (کبریہ سلسلہ)

  • Founder: Najmuddin Kubra (Khwarazm, d. 1221 CE)
  • Spread: Central Asia, Iran, parts of India
  • Key Feature: Emphasis on dreams, visions, spiritual cosmology

8. Bektashi Order

  • Founder: Haji Bektash Veli (Turkey, 13th century)
  • Spread: Turkey, Balkans
  • Traits: Shia-Sufi blend, liberal practices

9. Tijaniyya (تیجانیہ سلسلہ)

  • Founder: Ahmad al-Tijani (Algeria, 18th century)
  • Mainly in: North and West Africa
  • Key Feature: Emphasis on direct spiritual link with Prophet ﷺ

10. Mevlevi Silsila (مولوی سلسلہ)

  • Founder: Followers of Jalaluddin Rumi (esp. his son Sultan Walad)
  • Based in: Konya, Turkey
  • Practices: Sama (whirling dance), poetry, love-based devotion

Note: Most Sufi orders trace their lineage back to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through either Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) or Abu Bakr (RA). They aim for inner purification, divine love, and closeness to Allah through spiritual mentorship.
