WASHINGTON: U.S. employers posted 7.08 million job openings in August, down from a revised 7.34 million in July, according to the Labor Department’s latest JOLTS report.

The August total was below economists’ expectations and represented the lowest level since March. At the same time, layoffs declined and hiring edged higher, indicating that the labor market remains relatively stable despite slower growth.
The report is being watched closely ahead of the next monthly employment report and as Federal Reserve officials assess labor-market conditions alongside inflation.
